Astronomy Telescope

Astronomy with a Mail-Order Telescope by Patrick Moore,

Astronomy with a Mail-Order Telescope by Patrick Moore,
Sir Patrick Moore, CBE, FRS has long been the scourge of those people selling low-cost astronomical telescopes via mail-order catalogues and non-specialist stores. Ten years ago the quality was appalling and disappointment would have been almost guaranteed - but times have changed, and having surveyed some the best and worst of today's inexpensive mail-order catalogue and main-street astronomical telescopes Patrick has admitted to being astonished by how good some of them are. Today, the best are now excellent value and useful instruments. Part One of Astronomy With a Mail-order Telescope provides reports on some available models along with detailed and essential hints and tips about what to look for when buying. Part Two describes how best to use the telescope, which celestial objects to observe (with full-page star charts to help find them), what you can expect to see, and how to take and even computer-enhance astronomical photographs.

The 20-CM Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope: A Practical Observing Guide by Peter L. Manly,
The 20-CM Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope: A Practical Observing Guide by Peter L. Manly,
The 20-cm (8-in) Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope is the most popular telescope in the world. This compact instrument revolutionized amateur astronomy and astrophotography, and more than ten thousand are purchased each year. Manly, a devotee and keen user of the Schmidt-Cassegrain, takes the telescope owner, in easy stages, through all aspects of using the telescope. He starts with techniques for viewing the Moon, then takes the observer through our planetary system, and on to the deep sky, where nebulae and galaxies are treated extensively. There are interesting projects to try, such as observing the nearest star and chasing eclipses. The book describes a full range of telescope accessories and detectors together with advice on their use. The 40-page appendix is packed with hard-to-find practical information. Peter Manly is the author of Unusual Telescopes (CUP, 1992).

Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory - Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory (MRAO) is home to a number of large aperture synthesis radio telescopes, including the One-Mile Telescope, 5km Ryle Telescope, and the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager. Radio interferometry started in the mid 1940s on the outskirts of Cambridge, but with funding from the Science Research Council and a donation of £100,000 from Mullard Limited, construction of the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory commenced at Lord's Bridge, a few kilometres to the west of Cambridge.

One-Mile Telescope - The 'One-Mile Telescope' at the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory (MRAO) was completed by the Radio Astronomy Group of Cambridge University in 1964. It is an array of radio telescopes (2 fixed and 1 moveable, fully steerable 60-ft-diameter paraboloids operating simultaneously at 1420 and 408 MHz) designed to perform aperture synthesis interferometry.

Sky & Telescope - Sky & Telescope is a monthly magazine providing articles and information on all aspects of astronomy, space exploration, telescope equipment, and amateur telescope making and use. The articles are intended for the lay reader, but are not overly simplified.

Ryle Telescope - The Ryle Telescope (also known as the '5 km telescope') was a linear East-West radio telescope array at Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory. In 2004 three of the telescopes were moved, creating a compact two-dimensional array of telescopes at the East end of the interferometer.
